National Workshop on MARPOL Annex V and Port Reception Facilities 2020 (HB)_MAM

The Regional Organization for the Conservation of the Environment of the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden (PERSGA) in cooperation with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency (EEAA) has successfully concluded a three day semi-virtual National Workshop on the implementation and Enforcement of MARPOL Annex V and Port Reception Facilities. This hybrid (partially by teleconferencing) event took place in the premises of the Emergency Mutual Aid Center (EMARSGA) in Hurghada – Arab Republic of Egypt during the period Tuesday the 17th of November 2020  until Thursday the 19th of November 2020, with the main objective of training target groups onthe preventing marine pollution from ships in Egypt. An additional objective of the workshop was for the participants to have a greater understanding and appreciation of the latest requirements for implementation and enforcement of MARPOL Annex V and ship garbage regulations.

Thirty one participants representing EEAA and different agencies responsible for marine transport and combating pollution in Egypt attended this workshop. The material for the workshop was given by an international Consultant Dr. Capt Mohab Mahmoud Abu Elkawam and experts from PERSGA. Other MARPOL Annexes (I, II, III, IV and VI) were also explained briefly during the workshop. The PERSGA expert updated participants on the on-going efforts to designate the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden as a special area under MARPOL Annex I and V. The workshop was conducted interactively and the hybrid event was highly successful and met its overall objectives. The participants expressed their satisfaction with the course and believed that they are likely to use the information gained during the workshop. The 3-days semi-virtual training workshop provided an excellent and effective platform for participants to exchange views and expertise on the subject.
