Regional Workshop on Climate Smart Fisheries and Aquaculture

To achieve sustainable fishery and aquaculture in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, the SFISH project considers the importance of strengthening capacities to adopt climate-smart policies and management of these sectors, and joining the regional efforts for cooperative approach in Red Sea and Gulf of Aden region.

In this framework, PERSGA organized a regional workshop to provide regional guidelines training, and platform to exchange knowledge experience. The workshop joined national specialists from all PERSGA member states with regional and international expert, and took place during 5th-8th January 2026 at PERSGA HQ in Jeddah.

The four-day program of the workshop includes a combination of background presentations, groupworks and panel discussions. The program agenda handled various topics over 12 sessions covering:

  • Climate change impacts on coastal marine ecosystems, fisheries and aquaculture with emphasis on vulnerabilities of the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden living marine resources and habitats.
  • Adaptation and mitigation measures, their policy management and various options for the fishery sectors, taking into account relevant international, regional and national and mechanisms.
  • Climate-smart fisheries conceptual framework and implementation practices, building resilience for fisheries and aquaculture
  • Mitigation and emission reduction tools in fisheries and aquaculture (e.g. fishery and production operations and value chain, etc.)
  • Approaches and options for regional collaboration, including case studies
  • Financing and technical assistance opportunities under various frameworks, such as carbon markets, regional and internation funding mechanisms
  • Obstacles for the region, such as policy and capacity gaps, and capacity building needs

In addition to the technical training, the workshop provided an excellent platform to discuss regional cooperation frameworks in advancing climate-resilient practices, and identifying capacity gaps, policy needs, and opportunities for integration.
