As part of the activities of the regional project “Sustainable Fisheries Development in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden” (SFISH Project), implemented by the PERSGA in partnership with the World Bank, the Regional Organization (PERSGA), in collaboration with the Higher Council for Environment and Natural Resources, carried out a series of awareness activities targeting fishermen in the Republic of Sudan. The activities were conducted over two days, from 23–24 November 2025, in the cities of Swakin andPort Sudan, respectively.
The activities aimed to enhance environmental awareness among fishermen, introduce them to the risks of Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing, highlight the impacts of ghost fishing gear, and emphasize the importance of sustainable fisheries management in the region.
The program included awareness lectures on the role and activities of the Regional Organization, the risks of fishing gear and ghost fishing, and an introduction to the concept of IUU fishing and its environmental, economic, and social impacts. It also featured briefing sessions on the Marine Fisheries Law.
Approximately 81 fishermen participated in these activities, in addition to the Women’s Friends of Fishermen Association in Swakin. The events witnessed strong engagement and positive interaction from the participants.
