The Regional Organization for the Conservation of the Environment of the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden PERSGA successfully concluded a two day National Training Workshop on the Regional Information Management System RIMS in Port Sudan Sudan on 11-12 February 2026. The workshop brought together 25 specialists from key Sudanese institutions responsible for marine environmental management fisheries and coastal protection.

Comprehensive Capacity Building

The training workshop provided participants with hands on experience using RIMS which is PERSGA flagship cloud based platform for regional marine data management. Participants received comprehensive training on system navigation data entry procedures and the utilization of RIMS modules most relevant to Sudan marine monitoring activities including fisheries landing data water quality monitoring marine protected area management and marine pollution incident reporting.

The workshop was facilitated by PERSGA team who delivered all training content in Arabic to ensure effective knowledge transfer and maximum participant engagement.

Strong Institutional Participation

The workshop achieved broad institutional representation from Sudan marine sector with 25 participants from diverse organizations including Marine Fisheries Administration with 14 participants as the primary national authority for fisheries management. Fish Research Station contributed 2 participants conducting scientific assessments of marine resources. Supreme Council for Environment and Tourism participated in coordinating environmental policy.

Marine Protected Areas Authority sent 2 participants managing coastal conservation zones. Coast Guard Unit participated representing maritime regulation enforcement. Red Sea University and College of Marine Sciences and Fisheries contributed 2 participants from academic research institutions. Marine Research Institute participated conducting long term marine studies. Naval Base Intelligence and Economic Security represented maritime security stakeholders. Sudan Television covered the event to raise public awareness.

This multi stakeholder participation reflects Sudan commitment to integrated marine environmental management and demonstrates the cross sectoral nature of effective marine data systems.

Strategic Foundation for Implementation

During technical consultations held throughout the workshop participants discussed critical implementation steps for RIMS deployment in Sudan including the designation of a national Knowledge Management Officer to coordinate between PERSGA and Sudanese institutions. Discussions covered identification of priority datasets for initial system population and integration of RIMS into existing national data collection workflows.

Participants emphasized the importance of finalizing and endorsing the Operational Level Plan which provides the foundational framework that defines data governance structures quality assurance procedures and operational protocols while respecting national data sovereignty. The plan will provide clear guidelines for data sharing and regional collaboration while ensuring Sudan retains full control over its national marine data.

Sudan Strategic Role in Regional Marine Data Management

Sudan extensive Red Sea coastline and rich marine biodiversity position the country as a key contributor to PERSGA regional marine information infrastructure. With significant fisheries resources coastal protected areas and ongoing marine monitoring programs Sudan possesses valuable data assets that will enhance regional understanding of Red Sea ecosystem dynamics.

The workshop represents a significant milestone in Sudan participation in PERSGA regional data management initiative. PERSGA previously conducted a national RIMS training workshop in Jordan in December 2025 and a sub regional workshop in Djibouti in January 2026 with participants from both Djibouti and Somalia. The Egypt national training workshop was held in early February 2026.

Next Steps

PERSGA will provide follow up support to workshop participants including distribution of Arabic language user guides and training materials. Individual system access credentials will be provided for continued practice. A dedicated Arabic language technical support channel will be established. PERSGA will coordinate with Sudanese institutions on the formal designation of Sudan Knowledge Management Officer.

This workshop was conducted under PERSGA SFISH Project which focuses on Sustainable Fisheries Management in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. The project aims to strengthen regional capacity for evidence based marine resource management and promote sustainable blue economy development across all seven PERSGA member states.
