Behavior of Crude Oil in Marine Environment

In a collaboration between the Regional organization for the conservation of the Environment of the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden (PERSGA) and the Oil Spill Response Limited (OSRL)-the largest international industry-funded cooperative to respond to oil spills, a webinar on ” Fate and Behavior of Arabian Crude Oils at sea and the response options” was jointly organized on 23rd February 2021 at 1:00pm (Riyadh Time).

The webinar aimed at enhancing awareness of the delegates from PERSGA member states on the fate of the Arabian light crude oil once it is spilled into the marine environment and the different weathering processes, and to understand the main response options employed during oil spill incidents and their operational limitations. During the session the most suitable response options for Marib Light crude were discussed and how these options can be applied as well as their limitations.

An additional objective was to expose the participants to the importance of oil spill Waste Management & final Disposal in an environmentally sound manner through case studies and lessons learnt.

The three sessions of the webinar were delivered by experts from Oil Spill Response Limited (OSRL) and moderated by an expert from PERSGA.

It was attended by about 25 specialists representing various relevant agencies in PERSGA member states, namely the Republic of Djibouti, the Arab Republic of Egypt, the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Federal Republic of Somalia, the Republic of Sudan and the Republic of Yemen.
