PERSGA has performed ambient air regional sampling for dioxin and furan analysis in the coastal areas of Jordan, Egypt and Sudan. In addition sediment samples have been collected in collaboration with national sampling specialists from the countries.
This mission comes within the framework of implementing the regional project "Promotion of strategies to reduce unintentional production of POPs in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden coastal zone" which is implemented in collaboration with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).
; At an earlier stage of the project, a team of national specialists from the participating countries has been trained on the process of collecting samples from different environmental media.
The sampling process comes after a team of experts surveyed and identified the sources of emissions of POPs, and thus proposed the sampling sites.
The samples will be sent for analysis in an internationally accredited laboratory to determine the concentrations of these pollutants, putting the first step in building a baseline of the levels of POPs in different environmental media in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden coastal area.
