08/06/2011 Drafting a Regional Strategy for Ships’ Ballast Water Management

The Regional Organization for the Conservation of Environment of the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden has organized a Regional Taskforce Meeting of the GloBallast Partnerships Project for finalizing a Draft Regional Strategy for Ballast Water management. The meeting took place at the Center of Emergency Mutual Aid in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden “ EMARSGA” during the period June 6th – 7th 2011.

POPs Group PhotoThe meeting comes in the framework of the continuing collaboration between PERSGA and the responsible authorities in the Member Countries for protection of the marine environment and human health. It also forms a platform for exchange of information and expertise in this strategic issue. The meeting was held in collaboration with the International Maritime Organization “IMO” that manages an international project on Ballast Water Management. This issue has been a subject of an international agreement that is about to enter into force and become binding. The agreement has so far been ratified by 28 countries, while it needs the ratification of 30 countries possessing 35% of global shipment to enter into force.

The meeting joined participants from Djibouti, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Sudan and Yemen as well as experts from IMO, PERSGA and the Regional Marine Pollution Emergency Centre in the Mediterranean Sea. The meeting is also considered an example of collaboration between different ministries as participants represented Ministries of Environment, Transport and Ports Authorities. PERSGA is also helping partner countries in developing national strategies where experts from different ministries and authorities as well as scientific institutions are involved.
