In collaboration with the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Urban Development of the Republic of Sudan, PERSGA organized a training work shop for members of the media in Khartoum.The workshop was held from 30 November to 1 December 2014 and focused on the importance of marine and coastal environments to human and social welfare.
The training was held within the framework of the regional strategy for environmental awareness for sustainable development. One of the main objectives of the strategy is to support the media as they promote and spread a culture of marine environmental protection and sustainable development within the PERSGA member states.
The workshop programme covered a variety of different subjects including the role of the media in promoting sustainable development, the importance to society of marine and coastal resources, the impact of climate change on coastal environments, as well as international marine environmental agreements. The aim was to provide representatives of the media with the necessary background and basic information on marine environmental issues to facilitate their work.
The workshop was opened by Dr. Hassan Abdelgadir Hilal, Sudanese Minister of Environment, Forests and Urban Development, who expressed the Ministry’s interest in supporting environmental issues and encouraging positive behavior that will contribute to the preservation of the marine and coastal environment.
The workshop was attended by about thirty-five participants from all the media institutions in Khartoum including directors, announcers, presenters and journalists in addition to the chief editors from several newspapers,both paper and electronic. Participants made positive contributions with active interactions particularly in sessions on writing environmental news for different media formats. PERSGA and the Minster provided attendance certificates to all the trainees.
The workshop was reported widely in the media both inside and outside the Sudan. Dr. Mahgoub Hassan, environmental specialist and workshop coordinator and Mr. Habib Abdi Houssein Abdi, coordinator of the awareness program for PERSGA, were invited to appear on the Ashorooq TV channel. The PERSGA delegation also presented statements and interviews to local radio stations about the importance of the training workshop and the role of the media in raising awareness about marine environmental issues.
The Regional Organization for the Conservation of the Environment in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden
