Cooperation between PERSGA and the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) has witnessed considerable enhancement. In this framework, PERSGA and UNEP are planning to implement several joint projects and activities to support implementation of the Regional Action Plan (RAP), which basically aims at conservation of the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden environment and achieve sustainable development in the region. The current and upcoming joint projects, together with other aspects of cooperation between PERSGA and UNEP have thoroughly been discussed during the visit conducted by the Coordinator of the UNEP Regional Seas Program to PERSGA HQ in Jeddah during 16-18 July 2013.
PERSGA Secretary General, Prof. Ziad Abu Ghararah has valued the continuous and growing cooperation with UNEP, which he considered as the topmost important international partner of PERSGA that support the implementation of the PERSGA RAP. He explained that a work plan was developed through which UNEP will support implementation of several joined projects and activities during the 2013/2014 biennium. These will be mainly directed to the implementation of the ecosystem based management, assessment and control of pollution loads, economic valuation of marine ecosystems, climate change impacts, and environmental monitoring in PERSGA region.
