Prof. Ziad Abu-Ghararah PERSGA Secretary General addressed the High Level Segment, which includes ministers, heads of delegates and intergovernmental organizations, during the UNFCCC Conference of Parties (COP18-CMP8), held during 26 November-05 December 20 in Doha, Qatar . After introducing PERSGA mission, member states and activities, Prof. Abu Ghararah highlighted the unique biodiversity of the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden region, its peculiar high numbers of endemic species, which renders the region global conservation merits of as depository of marine biodiversity region. At the same time the regions ecosystems are relatively fragile and highly vulnerable to the impacts of Climate Change, which imposes serious threats to these endemic species that may lead to their extinction.
Recognizing this, PERSGA has established regional efforts to develop and implement a regional strategy for adaptation to climate change impacts in coastal and marine environments. The strategy puts great emphasis on Ecosystem based Adaptations (EbA), as an integral part of its components, which focuses on strengthening resilience of the key ecosystems (Coral Reefs – Mangroves– Sea Grass beds and salt marshes) that are significant for protection from the impacts, as well as mitigation through carbon sequestration. PERSGA is continuously encouraging its member countries to include EbA in its national policies, and is looking forward to collaborate with regional and international partners to support its efforts for the conservation of the marine environment and implementation of ecosystem based solutions for both sustainable resource management and adaptation to climate change impacts
